Roots & Futures

Roots & Futures is a free weekly youth cohort for students in grades 6–12 that helps young people learn about their community, build leadership skills, and turn their ideas into action.

Throughout the school year, participants explore issues impacting youth, connect with community organizations, and develop projects that make a positive difference.

Each cohort is designed around the community where it takes place; this year's cohort will focus on Lafayette, Colorado, and includes free meals and participation stipends for youth.

Applications are now open for the August 2026 Roots & Futures cohort. Register today to reserve your spot.

ROOTS: Identity & Belonging

During the first phase, participants learn about the issues impacting young people and the community. Youth explore these topics through group discussions, storytelling, and conversations with community members.

Participants help plan and lead community cafés to learn from others and gather different perspectives. They also reflect on their own experiences, strengths, and connection to the community.

Activities Include:

  • Community cafés

  • Youth panels

  • Guest speakers

  • Storytelling projects

  • Art projects

  • Community interviews

  • Group discussions

  • Public showcase

At the end of the Roots phase, participants will host a public showcase where they share their stories, experiences, and what they have learned.

FUTURES: Leadership & Action

During the second phase, participants use what they learned during the Roots phase to design and lead projects that address issues impacting young people and their community.

Youth work together to identify a community issue they want to address and partner with local organizations and community leaders to bring their ideas to life. Through these projects, participants gain hands-on experience creating positive change in their community.

Activities Include:

  • Explore community resources

  • Build community partnerships

  • Develop project ideas

  • Create project pitches

  • Lead community projects

  • Engage community members

  • Celebrate project successes

  • Earn leadership diploma

At the end of the Futures phase, participants will showcase their projects, celebrate their accomplishments, and reflect on the positive impact they made in their community.
